Wisdom Teeth

At Reflection Cosmetic Dentistry, our general dentists can perform comfortable wisdom teeth removals for patients who are experiencing pain, teeth crowding, and other dental issues due to impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are third molars, and usually erupt between the ages of 16 and 25. They are thought to be called “wisdom” teeth because they do erupt so much later than other permanent teeth. Wisdom teeth are leftovers from our human ancestors, who had larger jaws and the need for more molars to consumer harder to eat foods. Even though modern humans have smaller jaws and no need for third molars, most adults can expect to have two to four wisdom teeth erupt.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

At our office, we may recommend wisdom tooth extraction if they are impacted, or if your wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems for your other teeth. Wisdom teeth are more difficult to keep clean, so they are also more likely to decay or become infected. Misaligned wisdom teeth can also rub up against your tongue or cheek causing pain and friction.

Do tooth extractions hurt?

Our general dentists make sure that your tooth extraction is very comfortable. You’ll receive local anesthetic and once it takes effect, you’ll feel completely numb. If you feel nervous about the extraction process, we can provide sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation and even IV sedation.

What should I expect after my wisdom teeth are extracted?

You’ll experience some bleeding after your wisdom teeth removal is completed. This should alleviate within 24 hours of your extraction. We recommend gently rinsing your mouth with salt water, which will reduce swelling and help with discomfort. Eat soft foods until your healing progresses enough to eat a normal diet. Don’t use straws or suck on hard candy because it can loosen the blood clot and stall the healing process. At our general dental practices, we’ll be happy to answer all your questions about your wisdom teeth extractions.
